Among them are mathematical problems derived directly from physics of elementary particles and problems of quantum statistical physics which are mathematically close to first ones. The group of L. D. Faddev in Mathematical Institute is mainly concerned on the research in this field. The investigations are front edge of Mathematical Physics - the domain where solid physical models aren't proposed yet. Department staff performs scientific research in several fields: Spectral Theory of Differential Operators Physical models have distinct nature though are issued mainly by quantum physics of atomic and molecular objects and outstanding problems of solid body physics. This field is the most popular and sophisticated in the "stable" domain of Mathematical Physics science. In this field our department is on position of world-wide importance. Research in this field is close to generic theory of boundary problems for partial differential equations. Department staff performs scientific research in several fields: Linear wave Propagation Theory Mathematical problems of linear theory of propagation of classical , elastic, acoustic, electromagnetic and radio waves. The problems has numerous applicability domains. Quite various mathematical methods are used. There are a lot of significant and original results in this field obtained by mathematicians of our city, in whose community the Dept. plays important role.
